Cerebral Palsy

What is Cerebral Palsy ?
Cerebral Palsy is the most common permanent physical disability of childhood.It is a neuromuscular disorder of the pyramidal motor system resulting in the major problem of impaired voluntary muscle control.The damage appears to be fixed and non progressive & the cause unknown. Although a variety of factors have been implicated in the etiology of CP (cranial pressure). Cranial Pressure results more commonly from prenatal brain abnormalities.
Most common type of Cerebral Palsy
a.Delayed developmental milestone
b.Tongue thrust with difficulty swallowing & sucking.Poor weight gain.Aspiration maybe occur.
c. Increased muscle tone :scissoring" (legs crossed,toes pointed).
d. Persistent neonatal reflexes.
e. Associated problem Cerebral Palsy : mental retardation,
,sensory impairement (vision,hearing), orthopedic condition (congenital displasia of hip,club foot), dental problem (malocclusion),s seizure.
Implementation for the nursing care patient Cerebral Palsy : maintain patetn airway , promoted adequate nutrition, Facilitate verbal communication,prevent injury,provide early detection of and correction for vision & hearing defect.Encourage infant stimulation program,refer to physical therapy & incorporate play into exercise routine.
